Christmas traditions: A blend of cultures and traditions

Page 3

The islands of Curaçao, Aruba, Bonaire, St. Maarten, and Barbados may share the same Caribbean Sea, but when it comes to Christmas traditions, each island has its very own flavor. Take a closer look at how we celebrate the holiday season. In Curaçao, the Christmas spirit comes alive with delicious traditional foods like ayaca, ham di Pasku and sult. Families gather on the evening of the 24th of December, for a ‘Noche Buena’ (Christmas Eve) dinner. Traditional year’s end Tambú performances are locally famous, while the year ends with big rework displays. In Bonaire, Christmas traditions intertwine with those of Curaçao. Locals enjoy special dishes like ‘pan dushi’, ‘kalakuna’, and ‘piska den zur’. Gifts are exchanged both on ‘Noche Buena’ and on the 25th, making the celebrations even more special. Aruba is inuenced by a colorful blend of communities, which is reected in the dierent Christmas traditions. Festive lights and Christmas decorations adorn the island and some choose a cheerful bus tour to enjoy the Christmas lights with friends and family. Gaita groups add musical cheer to the seasonal atmosphere. Families enjoy holiday treats like Ham, ‘Ayaca’, ‘Pan de hamon’, ‘Oliebollen’, and the traditional drink ‘Ponche crema’. Many restaurants feature special group menus for colleagues and friends to celebrate together. On New Year’s, Dande musical groups visit homes after midnight reworks, collecting contributions for personalized good wishes, creating a heartwarming start to the year. Barbados indulges in a feast of holiday foods like ham, pork, chicken, turkey, and macaroni pie. The islanders attend church services and exchange gifts under beautifully decorated Christmas trees. Cleaning houses from top to bottom is a cherished tradition, along with visiting friends and family to share food and drinks.Cultural dishes like Johnny Cakes and Christmas Ham, along with Coconut Tart dessert, grace the Christmas tables in St. Maarten. Guavaberry rum is a celebratory drink, and families come together for hearty meals and games like Dominoes. The festivities extend to Boxing Day. While each island has its distinct customs, we all share the common thread of celebrating with loved ones.Christmas traditions: A blend of cultures and traditions03
